ANSI/AAMI PB70:2012 provides liquid barrier performance standards and rates different levels of protective clothing. AAMI addresses fluid protection in critical areas where operating room staff are most likely to come into direct contact with potentially infectious materials.
What is critical area? In a surgical gown, it includes most of the sleeves and front. Both fabric and construction (sleeve seams and front tie attachment) are tested. The back of the robe may have no protection.
Level of protection? It depends on the type of surgery.
AAMI LEVEL 4 for the highest liquid and microbial barrier protection against blood-borne pathogens in critical areas. Prolonged fluid-intensive treatment is required. Also suitable for surgery in patients at risk for potential bloodborne pathogens.
AAMI LEVEL 3 MODERATE FLUID BARRIER PROTECTIOB is suitable for the widest range of surgical procedures where proper fluid protection is required.
AAMI LEVEL 2 minimum to low fluid barrier protection, only for minimally invasive procedures, lumps and masses with low fluid.
